Do you have an innovative digital based idea that has the potential to address a specific societal challenge??

That was the question proposed by CHEST (Collective enHanced Environment for Social Tasks), a 30 month Collaborative project co-financed with support from the European Commission. IdeasBrocolis participated with the next project idea:::

Idea Outline

foodPreneurs is a digital platform which provides local small food sellers with a community to rethink and promote their business models in order to survive against the monopoly of big commercial areas, by using new tools and the support of customers.

The Challenge

Local markets and grocery stores, also known for their relevance in the social life of a neighbourhood, are more and more being socially excluded by big commercial areas. Losing the shopping experience, the relation between the salesmen and the neighbours, and mainly, the consumption of fresh and quality products are some of the consequences. Markets are driven by experienced people that lack the skills to creatively rethink their business to compete against big supermarkets. Even though those sellers are placed next to each other, they feel a lack of support and collaboration channels. Besides, the daily buyer, as essential part of the urban market, cannot access information about food origins, its characteristics, its supply chains and the socio-environmental impact that it generates.

Biomimicry Design Challenge

Biomimicry is a design approach, or even a life approach that helps us see and imitate the amazing functionalities that nature has been developing for around 3 billion years. Ideas Brocolis took part in the anual 2012-2013 Biomimicry Challenge organised by the Biomimicry 3.8 Institute, where a new design was developed in order to reduce the poverty in the access to water throughout the World. What a better way to think on how to capture water than looking at how nature has been doing so for years and years!

Take a look at our final presentation of the project:

An international analysis of slums we conducted ourselves made us realize that slums are a worldwide phenomena with different geographical and climatic contexts, sizes, levels of infrastructure and environmental, social/ political problems. The slum we chose is Bhalsawa in Delhi, and to understand it better, we used the expertise of a former Delhi resident.

We then had to backcast from our vision

a sustainable future where water scarcity in the slums of Delhi is no longer an issue

The first recognition is that the product or system that we design would take us in the right direction towards that future, and stand as a platform for future development, not a catch-all solution.

So, what is Lego Serious Play? Why is so interesting to “play” with it? Here, I will tell you my own experience.

Because of the collaboration with the European project “SITinVET”, Ideas Brocolis had the opportunity to facilitate a series of workshops in Spain, Slovakia and Turkey. Here, I will tell you why is so interesting to play with the methodology of Lego Serious Play!

Even if you have not played with those small colourful bricks when you were a child, you should have seen it  before somewhere.

LSP is a new methodology to build reflections, dialogue, constructive conversations, and knowledge sharing around a question.

Every model means something and it is different for every person, even if they have the same amount of pieces.

Every model tell us a different and personal story.

Every model is a metaphor of your own thoughts.

As one of the alumni said:

“An undescribable experience that empowered us all with tools and life-long friends. I am still unfolding the layers of benefits this program has gifted me with!”

Check out below the infographic that IdeasBrocolis developed and tell us how you feel.
